"Sinkhole" Script and documentation

Cleaning up our own mess is just what we do. Our parents taught us that from the very beginning.

But when a mining company in Carlsbad caused a huge sinkhole near town, they simply closed up shop and walked away even though it threatened homes, businesses – even a church."

“Without action, experts say, the earth could crumble, pulling homes, businesses, roads and a church for Jehovah’s Witnesses into a sinkhole more than 400 feet deep.”

“The mine had been owned and operated by New Mexico-based I & W Inc. since 1995, but the company filed for bankruptcy in 2011 before completing any remediation work.”

“Analysis of the cavern shows the area impacted by a collapse would be much larger, one-thousand feet wide by 1.7 thousand feet long, and would affect a mobile home park, a place of worship, a feed store, two highways (US 285 and US 180/62), a BNSF Railways facility, and Carlsbad Irrigation District’s Southern Main canal. Both potentially impacted highways are designated Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) transportation routes. A collapse could also adversely impact groundwater and surface habitat.”

"So why would Governor Martinez personally ask legislators to cover the tab to clean up their mess?

It turns out the owners gave governor Martinez’s campaign almost $20,000 (more than $18000) , now you and I get stuck with the twenty-five million dollar bill.

Doesn’t New Mexico deserve better?"

“On Jan. 25, Martinez asked the Legislature to consider the bill”
